| The Jurassic Coast
Run is a stunning all round 10km, encompassing
coast, cliffs, river and rural paths. The Run (SEAA Race
Permit number 7352) is designed to offer runners a callenging
and picturesque route and to raise money for charity.
The Jurassic Coast 10km Run will, unfortunately, not be held this year (2008).
Ray Jaeckels from the British Association of Road Races attended the event last year and stated that in order to obtain a permit for the event this year the following factors detailed below needed to be changed. His comments are numbered and the organisers thoughts are in blue.
We are very disappointed that such factors have stopped a run that was enjoyed by many (174 finishers last year) raising over £1,500 for Cancer FORCE. It has been a successful event for 3 years. It is a friendly, sociable, community event over an extremely scenic area of the countryside that we wanted to share with fellow runners and people that love the great outdoors.
1. The Drink station at the finish needs to be supervised as self service can lead to poor hygiene
Easily rectified - a marshal monitoring the drinks
2. More marshals along the course
Will recruit more marshals - though I am sure all of you that are involved in organising events realise how difficult this is.
3. Print out of the results needs to be available on the day
This was not possible as the finishing/results tent is outdoors and there is no power socket available for the printer. Therefore difficult to achieve shortly after runners finish though as last year results were available on the web site on the same day as the event.
4. Posts at the end of the car park were not clear apart from to the first runner and this could have lead to an accident
The posts were clearly marked with tape. This issue can be helped by another marshal at the posts warning runners.
5 Dangerous path beside the river otter along the first 1.5km of the run due to walkers and runners sharing the same path. Mr Jaeckles suggests changing the race route to go along the road from Granary lane to South Farm.
The organisers consider this a far more dangerous route as there are blind bends along the road and it only takes one fast car or careless driver to result in a runner becoming seriously injured.
6. The kissing gates could cause the runners to race up to the gates to avoid waiting to pass them which may be dangerous!
Has the world gone mad, are runners not able to take some responsibility for how they run the race?
7. If there is a casualty on a narrow section of the path it could be a difficult area to access as well as having the potential to seriously disrupt the race.
Yes this is a consideration though does this mean we should all be only running around athletic tracks only so it is easy to access first aid stations? It is a multi-terrain event if all risks were taken out of all routes and runs there would be no outdoor runs in existence.
8. No instructions were given to runners not to fold, cut or mutilate their race numbers
This is true, sorry it was taken as an assumption that runners would not do this! On the next race instructions this will be stated.
I will not continue as I am sure by now you are getting the idea. Although a few of these points are easy to address the Jurassic Coast 10km team have decided to take a year off to contemplate the future.
I am very sorry to those who hoped to run the JC 10km this year.
I will do my upmost to have it up and running again for 2009!
Kind Regards
